Rewrite Your Reality (One Line at a Time)
How Your Moment-to-Moment Mindset Matters More Than You May Realize
When we’re stuck — it’s hard to reimagine a reality that liberates us from being stuck. We stare at the blank page. We wait for a breakthrough. We give up and ghost our routines, projects, relationships. Because we’ve all been through a rewrite. Essays, stories, scenes, scripts. Emails you had to send and texts you never sent, left on read.
Rewriting is hard. Revisions are hard. Reinvention is hard. Revolution is hard.
It’s so much easier to just maintain and cope with the status quo. Maybe not emotionally, but energetically, when we’re stuck, it’s hard to figure out next steps.
The first few posts of Revision Mode explore what it means in theory and practice to embrace “Revision Mode” as a mindset. Understanding how we are all fundamentally a work-in-progress. Exploring what it takes to find our creative ignition, or the energetic spark to make change happen. And my most recent post unpacks lessons learned from celebrating my 100-Day-Streak of Everyday Creativity — creating something, anything, new every day, and documenting it.
Writers know Revision Mode well. We’re in it all the time. We pause the draft, plan and re-plot our rewrites, reframe the narrative. And we usually revise our endings too, typically because we’ve taken the time to discover, to explore, and to respond in a way that serves the story better, that is maybe, somehow, more true.
What if you could do the same thing with your life? Spoiler alert: we can.
Yes, Writers, I am absolutely talking about how to harness the main character energy we craft onto the page, onto the stage and screen, and apply it to your day-to-day life. From your daily routine to your writing practice and also to the writing you produce.
That’s not just a metaphor. It’s mindset work. And mindset work is story work.
More broadly, Artists and Entrepreneurs, Creative Thinkers in all sectors, I’m talking about how buying into the stories we’ve told ourselves for years can prevent us from realizing how we’re evolving, changing, and growing. How stories others tell about us can unwittingly contribute to our own limiting beliefs about who we are, what we really want, and what we want to do with our day-to-day. Creating. Innovating. Designing. Leading. Building teams, launching projects, initiatives, campaigns, and movements. Nurturing families. Classrooms. Connections to our community.
Sometimes rewriting your reality starts small: a pause. A deep breath. A new morning thought. A new tone of voice. A better metaphor for what you’re going through.
Other times? It's a full rewrite. But maybe it’s just one page, one line at a time.
🌀 This month’s paid Revision Mode deep dive explores the pause and the page one. I’ll share how I’ve been applying rewrite tools—honed in the fires of Hollywood’s so-called Development Hell—and reframing them through the lens of ancient wisdom, spiritual traditions, and magical healing arts. Wait, what? I know. In doing so, I’ve been regenerating my creativity, reinventing my professional practice, and reigniting my passion for creative revolution. I hope it inspires some of the same energy for you!
The first quarterly master class is a guided rewrite of your own story. We’ll start with a mindset meditation, practical tools, and tactical advice ideally suited for writers, artists, and entrepreneurs. This e-workbook will be a download you can savor and enjoy, self-paced. If you’re ready to become the author of your next chapter, I’d love for you to join us. I launched at the end of Q1, so this MC is a bonus made possible by my early patrons. I plan to release the Q2 MC in June/July. Thank you!
Curated Creativity | Collaborative Community
At least once a month, I hope to feature a curation of cool events and workshops for you to note on your calendars. As we build this collaborative community together, I’ll be uplifting my fellow creatives as part of the free subscription, and engaging personally via comments and messages (AMA!) with the paid subscription. This month’s 3:2:1 Three Cool Events, Two Substacks, One Workshop - check ‘em out!
Three Cool Events | Artists You Should Follow
I have had the pleasure of working with each of these artists in various capacities this year, and going back several years across projects.
Dr. Keeonna Harris is a captivating storyteller and will be at Moreno Valley College tomorrow May 8. Los Angeles friends - make the trip!
Professor Vincent Singleton will be screening and doing a Q&A at Knox College in Galesburg, IL Friday May 9. His films are brilliant, and his Q&A will be illuminating.
Essence McDowell collaborated with us on We Still Teach. For Chicago friends, save the date: Invisible Giants screens at the Chicago History Museum May 21.
Two Substacks That Should Be On All Filmmakers and Founders’ Radars
For writers, artists, and entrepreneurs who are interested in following the evolution of the media landscape, I find both Ted and Dan to be voices of great insight:
Hope for Film by Ted Hope | Hopeful Conversations | Joe Lewis on Indie Television
Hollywood Politics by Dan Mirvish | Hollywood to Trump "Tariff: Don't Like It"
One Workshop You Don’t Want To Miss
Dr. Becca Klaver’s Wheel of the Year Workshops are soul-nourishing, supportive community spaces for writers and artists. I love the opportunity to refresh my creative practice, and realign my energy with what I want to write. A constant source of renewed inspiration. Next workshop will be in June, for the Summer Solstice.
So, readers, tell me: have you ever rewritten your reality—on purpose or by accident? I’m so curious, I hope you’ll post. I read every word and respond to all comments!
With creative fire, Kat
