Introducing Revision Mode
Rewrites. Reinvention. Creative Revolution. Welcome to my Substack Community!
Beginnings are hard. Beginning again, though?
I mean, maybe it’s even harder in some ways. In other ways, not so much — because we’ve been here before, right? Or maybe that’s precisely what makes finding the courage and confidence to start over so challenging for us sometimes.
Revision Mode is a Mindset
We’ve all heard the old adage that writing is rewriting. Taking that literally and as a metaphor for life — reinvention stories are my jam. And I think we’re all living through a pretty wild creative revolution right now. As a writer, producer, consultant, teaching artist, and mom: I’m feeling it; I’m here for it. Creativity and authenticity are defining our zeitgeist in exciting ways. I see this moment as an opportunity to engage and connect writers, artists, and entrepreneurs to build community around how our exploring our creative evolution can help us find a greater sense of belonging, a heightened sense of purpose, fulfillment, and joy in the day to day.
And because I happen to love being in revision mode as a writer, I want to explore this as a mindset, too — philosophically, pedagogically, personally — and I’m inviting you along for the ride.
I did the newsletter thing once before, with Chi-Town Screenwriting. There’s a story there, about working on it with my late producing partner, Tamika Spaulding, and how, after she passed away— it was so hard for me to keep it going. I made it through three months, and when the Revue platform closed, I couldn’t figure out how to begin again. But thanks to many of you - friends and family, collaborators, colleagues, and students alike, I started to chart a new path through the fog.
Today, I’m beginning again because I’m feeling that familiar call again. To be a helper, an organizer, a creator of opportunities and a community where folks feel they belong.
Over the past few years as I’ve been consulting beyond the global entertainment industry — using my storytelling expertise to support organizations and institutions, movements and campaigns, artists and entrepreneurs from multiple industries — I realized that I have a cool AF network of friends and clients and colleagues. And I’ve learned a lot from you about how storytelling, and revision mode mindset in particular, is applicable to many different fields.
Substack is an opportunity for me to offer you my thoughts, share my teaching, and in so doing, I hope to inspire more folks from different professional backgrounds to come together, connect, and build a creative community that goes beyond screenwriting, film, television and the global entertainment industry.
So this is a bit of an experiment to connect creatives - writers, artists, entrepreneurs, makers, builders, doers, thinkers and problem solvers - to collaborative opportunities in a different way, in a different space, and I’m excited to see what comes of this!
Connecting Our Creative Community
I’m launching this Substack for me, too. I love writing about creativity and this newsletter explores what it means to evolve as a Creative in habit and practice, as well as philosophically. Practically, this will be a way for me to share what’ve I learned and what I’m learning with you, including lessons from my teaching and coaching practice -- but in writing, for you to save and refer back to when you need it.
As a connector, I’m intrigued to explore how we can use Substack to foster a community where creatives from all industries and practices can connect to collaborative opportunities and learn from one another along the way. I’ll be curating opportunities to explore your creativity further based on what’s inspiring me, and if you have any opportunities you’d like to highlight, offer, or share— drop me a line.
